Brief 4- Final Images

These are my final images that I chose for my ‘Home’ Brief. I will explain each picture and its meaning.

Home Address

The first image I created was my home’s address. When you walk up to the front door of my house you can see this plaque which features my homes number. I created this image since when I was young, I got told that you should learn your address so that if you ever get lost you can find your way home so when i first moved to my home I memorised the address straight away and I have known it since I was 3.  I really like this image for many reasons. The first one being the colour composition. The way the bright green and yellow stand out against the brown bricks is really pretty and I think it makes the image more interesting to observe. Another aspect of this image I like is my use of depth of field. As you can see, by adjusting the focus of my camera, I was able to focus on the actual number of the house, thus blurring the flowers in the foreground of the picture. I think that if I had just taken this picture without the change in the depth of field, the picture would have been less attractive and perhaps even boring. I am very proud of this picture as it really depicts home to me and it looks visually interesting.

The second image I created was this one, which depicts my mother putting the washing out on our laundry line. This image reminded me of home simply because most mornings when I come downstairs after waking up I see my mother putting washing outside to dry. I chose this picture as one of my final images because I thought it was rather intriguing to look at due to the various colours and patterns shown on the image, the depth of field and the focus. As you can see from the image, I chose to focus on my mother through the hanging up washing, I thought that this angle was very attractive as it allowed me to play with the depth of field and focus more than it I was just taking the image from behind or in front of my mother. Also in the image you can see the different textures of the clothing despite the fact that they are out of focus which I think adds a sense of realness to the image as it seems as though you can almost feel them through the picture. I really like this image and since it is a sight I see at my home almost every morning, I feel as though it represents my home quite well.

The next picture I chose to be one of my final images was picture of my family portraits. The story behind this image was that my mother wanted to have family pictures done for her 40th birthday so we went to a studio and had these professionally taken. The images feature individual portraits and group pictures. My mother also placed a ‘LOVE’ home decor piece on top of it to represent how much love and affection is in our family. These images are placed at the top of our stairs so as you climb to the second floor of our house you can see the family. I created this image as I felt that it was quite interesting to look at and since if features multiple pictures within it and almost make the audience want to interact with it since they have to move in closer to see some of the images. As one can see, I once again played with the focus and depth of field of this image so that the images in the foreground were clearer than the ones in back, as I mentioned earlier, I did this because the viewer would then have the interact with picture more to see what the images further away actually were. I chose this picture to be in my final images because it actually shows my whole family together and even though we were posing, I remember just how much fun we were having taking them so it’s a really nice memory for me and I think made a lovely image.

The next picture I chose to be in my final images is a picture of my one year old german shepherd, Milo. We bought Milo after our last dog had died at the age of 14. Milo plays a big role in all of my family members lives. For me he helps me with my mental health. When I have panic attacks I lay down and stroke him and it helps calm me down. Therefore I really wanted to include him in my home brief because he is part of my family just as much as humans are. When taking this image, I really wanted to focus on his eyes since I find them very calming to look at when I’m feeling worried about something. I once again played with the depth of field in the image by blurring the background to make the focus on Milo’s face. I really like this image and I think it makes my dog look so adorable. Whenever I come home from university, he is always so excited to see me which makes coming back home so lovely.

I took this photo of my older brother while he was watching TV and I was just playing with my camera. I didn’t intend to use this image for my final home brief but the more I looked at it, the more I liked the picture. My brother and I have a very complicated relationship, we have a love hate relationship, most likely due to him having Aspergers and me being a normal teenager. I liked this image for many reasons, the first being the colours the whole picture generally includes all dark pictures apart from the orange cushion in the back of the image. I really liked this since the brightness of the cushion draws you to it and because of the position it also draws you to look at my brothers face since it was what I wanted the viewer to focus on. Another aspect I liked about this image was the depth of field. Due to the position I took this picture from you can clearly see the blurred background moving into a clear picture. I’m not quite sure what it is about the image that reminds me so much of home but I believe it to be casual position my brother is in, its something I see so often but I have never really registered til this picture. My brother is another aspect of home to me so I suppose that is why I wanted to include this image in my final ones.

The last picture I wish to use in my final images is this simple picture of a tea bag and a mug. This image might not seem like a ‘Home’ inspired picture but to me this is one of the main thing that make my house a home. The story behind the image is that while I am at home, my dad would wake me up every morning with a cup of tea, its almost like a routine for me and it helps wake me up and start my day. My father doesn’t do this because I ask him, it’s just out love for me. So I went down stairs one morning while he was making my tea and asked to take a picture of it. As you can see I drastically played with the depth of field to focus only on the tea bag in the foreground. I think this worked really well as one can still identify the objects in the background despite them being blurry. I also really like the lighting in this picture which was all natural although I did have to lower the ISO due to the brightness. I really like this picture and although it is very simple, it to me stands for so much more.
